The Committee for Ranked Choice Voting - People's Veto 2018

Sobre Nós

The Committee for Ranked Choice Voting is the nonprofit organization that launched and led the successful campaign to bring ranked choice voting to Maine. On November 8, 2016, a majority of Maine voters approved Question 5 - a first-in-the-nation law that adopts Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) for the election of U.S. Senators, U.S. Representatives, Governor, State Senators, and State Representatives. The initiative became law on January 7, 2017. Question 5 received the second most votes of any citizen referendum in Maine’s history.

Maine’s Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Senate President, and other politicians in Augusta have spent the last year working to derail the law, delay its implementation and force its repeal. And on October 23, 2017, the majority of members of the Maine State Legislature voted to delay and repeal the law.

Fortunately, Maine's Constitution provides that our citizens can veto actions of the legislature. Due to an outpouring of resistance from Maine people, the Committee for Ranked Choice Voting, its staff and thousands of volunteers, launched a People's Veto Campaign, to keep the law in force for use in time for the June 2018 election. Our immediate work is to collect 61,123 signatures from Maine registered voters in the next 90 days.
