Soul Dogs, Inc. (SDI) is a Colorado based nonprofit (501(c)(3)) that provides behavioral, habilitative, rehabilitative, and professional development services to individuals with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities and autism.
We receive our funding through the Fee For Service Medicaid System in Colorado, more specifically the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) waivers.
Our values include building teamwork between the individual, the animal, the therapist(s), and the support system. We act with respect, empathy, and compassion for all sentient beings. We do what is right and support our work with evidence-based documentation and research.
As for our goals, SDI has been created to fill a niche. As the ID/DD clinical community has become better informed on treating individuals with cognitive disabilities and a variety of mental health issues, the use of animals (other than horses in hippotherapy) has not been approved for funding. Our hope is that the service dog/assistance dog/emotional support dog/therapy dog industry’s value in helping this particular population of individuals heal may be documented and recognized as a viable service and worthy of waiver funding.
