Sobre Nós

Founded in 2000, Athens Photographic Project (APP) is a vibrant community of artists dedicated to using photography as a tool for personal growth, social change and self-expression within the journey toward mental health recovery.

APP’s programs are provided in partnership with mental health and social service organizations to ensure all community members have the opportunity to experience the transformative power of the arts. Each year, more than 60 artists, instructors, and volunteers join together to in our adult and teen photography classes. Classes integrate arts education, self-expression, peer-support, and social inclusion. Our programs are based on mutual support and a dedication to long-term relationship building, which fosters an environment for meaningful art making while recognizing the importance of the individual beyond what he/she/they create. Our artists use professional camera equipment and follow curricula that include photo history, visual theory, camera technique, take home assignments, workshops, art review, and field trips.

APP artists participate in exhibitions throughout the year. Our exhibitions reflect the insight, skill, and dedication present in our classes. APP artists have received local, state, and national attention for their photography and mental health advocacy. As artists, the group is recognized for its ability to transform commonplace aspects of life into expressive, insightful images, and for its contemporary reflection of Appalachian Ohio. As advocates, APP artists are confronting shame/stigma and increasing respect for individuals living with mental health challenges.
