A few years ago FunDonor's founder was on safari in Malawi. He was excited because there was a local school being built for charity nearby and he was keen to have a look. But when he arrived, there was no school, no building, nothing, just an old sign board. It turned out the project had been abandoned due to mismanagement - over $11M lost. This was heart-breaking but it led to a Eureka moment - FunDonor.

FunDonor’s goal is to create a fun way to raise money for charity. A key aim is to inspire confidence in donors, break problem of mistrust. The ultimate goal is to make charities more accountable to donors for monies received. The initiative is anchored on transparency that will make it hard for funds to be abused.

A secondary goal is to empower young people to give back. For it to work, it must be fun and needs to leverage a medium that young people enjoy. The obvious medium is social media. So FunDonor was centred on social media and included real financial rewards for young people as an incentive.

How it works is simple. Young people use social media to reach out and engage with their celebrity role model. They encourage them to offer their fans something unique in exchange for a $1 donation. Each $1 gives a chance to win whatever the role model is offering. All proceeds go to the role models/ celebrities charity. 

For any celebrity role model that takes part, the young ambassador that engaged them gets a reward - a 1% stake of monies received, most of which can only be used for charity or to fund their education.
