Territory NFP

Territory is a nationally-recognized place-based urban design studio for young people ages 14-24 located in the Austin neighborhood on Chicago’s west side. At Territory, young people are building better futures for themselves and their communities through the practice of design. They are gaining access to career skills in design, planning, and community development by doing real placemaking design-build projects that are transforming the built environment. In the process they are addressing decades of social and economic injustices and disinvestment through an inclusive, intergenerational design process intended to make the community whole again. 

All Territory staff uphold these five core values: 

Youth Agency: We elevate young people as leaders and advocates through relevant, hands-on, place-based action. 

Collaboration and Teamwork: We nurture safe, judgment free spaces to connect with peers, community partners, and city-wide to increase our shared effectiveness and be accountable. 

Design Equity: We use the design process to empower young people, and we reimagine the practice of design to be inclusive of young people with a focus on those populations most often excluded from design.

Adventurousness: We find solutions using the boldness, humor, loyalty, open-mindedness, and lived experiences of the people we serve

Impact: We do work that results in tangible positive change.
