Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is also known as Hashimoto’s disease, autoimmune thyroiditis, or chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. It is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the thyroid (hence the name thyroiditis) and a gradual destruction of thyroid tissue by the immune system. Hashimoto’s is also a progressive disease. Like all autoimmune diseases it has different degrees of severity. Hashimoto’s Awareness advocates the differentiation of 3 different stages of Hashimoto’s and all other autoimmune diseases. While the allopathic medical community does not generally recognize these stages, we believe they are very helpful in determining prognosis and treatment.
