Deep
Portage Learning Center is a private, non-profit residential environmental
learning center located in north-central Minnesota. Our campus is situated on
the south shore of Big Deep Lake and is part of the Deep Portage Conservation
Reserve, a 6,000 acre tract of glacial hills and lakes covered in
birch/aspen/pine transitional forest. We provide science and life skill education
programs for over 8,000 students from across Minnesota each year. Our 54,000 square-foot main building houses
guests and contains a 30-foot indoor climbing wall, modern classroom spaces,
and full kitchen and meal service facilities. Our campus is heated 100% by
biomass gasifiers and 25% of our electricity is produced on-site through
photovoltaic panel arrays and wind turbines. Deep Portage operates with a staff
of approximately 25, of which 10-12 are educators.
