Tanager Place

Tanager Place is Iowa’s premier health treatment facility for children facing a variety of mental, emotional and psychological challenges. The agency provides psychiatric care both on campus and within the community to more than 4,000 children annually.

Tanager Place was the first agency in Iowa to establish the level of care known as PMIC (Psychiatric Medical Institution for Children) and today serves more than 60 children annually through this inpatient program.

The outpatient Mental Health Clinic offers treatment for a variety of mental, emotional and developmental disorders. Areas of service include art therapy, play therapy, music therapy, child psychiatry, and therapy for the child and entire family. The newly launched Autism Spectrum Therapy Program offers treatment for disorders on the autism spectrum. Tanager Place is one of the few agencies in Iowa to house a Child Psychiatrist, Certified Behavior Analyst, Certified Music Therapist, Registered Art Therapist, and two Registered Play Therapists under one roof.

Tanager Place’s community based programs offer intervention and care to families in their homes. Staff work individually with each family in the home to provide intervention assistance based on the needs of the family.

Camp Tanager serves children whose economic and/or medical needs might not otherwise allow them the chance to enjoy a summertime camp experience. Specialty camps include the Hemophilia Camp and the Diabetes Camp.

Tanager Place is also the only children's agency to offer expressive arts therapy, using the visual arts, music and creative writing to help children link emotional trauma to language -- a critical step in the healing process.
