ALEXANDRIA SENIOR CITIZENS CENTER INC

In 1972, congregate dining sites were established throughout Douglas County supported primarily by Federal funds to help the elderly to live healthier lives by providing proper nutrition. In 1978 the program was enhanced by adding funding for home delivered meals. This service began first at the Marian Building and the lower level of Garden Center. When the Marian Building discontinued food services and Garden Center was not handicapped accessible, the Alexandria Senior Club incorporated and secured 501c3 status. They then rented the kitchen, dining room and lobby of the Alexson Hotel. Activities for older citizens became a part of the offering to enhance the food program and a need developed for more space. In 1983, a group of local citizens donated and raised enough money to purchase a part of a new building being built at 414 Hawthorne Street. The Senior Center officially moved there in 1984 and has provided services, entertainment and a place for our members to congregate ever since.
