Since
1915, Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church has served as a historic anchor of
New Orleans’ 7th Ward community. Before Hurricane Katrina, the Corpus Christi
School educated one thousand children per year. In 2005, both the church and
school were heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding and
vandalism. With assistance from FEMA, the church is renovating the 52,000
square-foot school to serve as a community center for health, wellness,
enrichment and economic opportunity. In partnership with tenants, the Corpus
Christi-Epiphany Church is establishing the Community Center for people of all
ages to access programs and services focused on economic opportunity, civic
engagement, community development, health and wellness, and youth development.
