Prison Writes
http://www.prisonwrites.org/, a division of the New York Writers Workshop
http://www.newyorkwritersworkshop.com/, brings therapeutic writing workshops to detained, incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals for therapy, advocacy, literacy and more. Our workshops are conducted according to social work group work methods and values with a strength based perspective and focus on building mutual aid between participants. Workshops are co-facilitated by a social worker and faculty member from the NYWW. America spends over $80 billion a year incarcerating over 2.4 million people. Writing can help people re-integrate into their communities and prevent recidivism.Thirty years of research shows that writing can improve relationships with others, reduce anger, and improve sleep and academic performance, as part of a long list of proven benefits.PW seeks to engage people who've been involved in our criminal justice system in using writing as a tool for personal healing and expression, to have fun and be creative, and to inform prison policy and reform.
