In Kenya there are 2 types of public schools: government supported and Harambee (a Swahili word that literally means "pulling together") community schools. With the introduction of free primary education public Harambee schools have classes that are too large. Rural and Slum public Harambee schools in Kenya are in crisis. This raises the issue of a crisis in the quality of education in Kenya. The major challenge is a lack of teachers in Kenyan schools. ADOPT A TEACHER IS A CAMPAIGN OF Education for all trust programmes which engages individuals, foundations, community groups, relevant stakeholders and business in the effort to resolve teachers crisis & quality education in Kenya slums & rural areas.

In 2007, adopt a teacher was founded as a response to the growing demands to recruit more teachers to cope with successful implementation of the Free Primary education policy.
