The Department of Theatre and Music is one of four units in the College of Architecture and the Arts. It enrolls some 80 undergraduate majors in music programs and over 90 undergraduate majors in theatre. The faculty consists of performing artists and scholars. There are 13 permanent faculty and more than 30 adjunct faculty. The Department offers course work leading to a BA in Music, a BM in Music Performance, a BM in Jazz Studies, a BFA in Theatre Performance, and a BA in Theatre. It sponsors a weekly series of free recitals by professional performers. Student ensembles include five choirs, concert band, jazz ensembles, string orchestra, athletic bands, and chamber groups. UIC enrolls over 25,000 students on a 240-acre site one mile west of Chicago’s Loop. The arts are part of the campus’s Great Cities Program which promotes the rich representation of many cultures on campus and in the region and encourages collaborations between the University and neighboring institutions.
