When a child is removed from their home due to abuse or neglect by their parents or caregivers, they are placed in foster care for their own safety. The Judge in our will ask for a CASA to represent the child. Then, the volunteer will meet with and gather information from as many people involved in the child's life as possible (family, teachers, physicians, neighbors, etc.) The CASA volunteer visits with the child at least once a month to get to know the child and find out what he or she wants. The Judge receives this information and the CASA's recommendation in report form so he can make the best-informed decision possible for the child.

CASA volunteers are thoroughly trained and supported by CASA staff so they are well-equipped to best speak on behalf of children in court proceedings. Because of this training and continuing training each year, a CASA volunteer does not need any special schooling or experience.

A CASA volunteer will ideally stay on a child's case (between one and two years) until they are adopted or, if possible, reunited with family. This is another thing that makes a CASA so special. Caseworkers come and go so frequently that a child may feel that they've been abandoned each time their caseworker changes. In addition, caseworkers often have very heavy caseloads. CASA's work only one case at a time so they are a constant for each child.
