It is Loaves & Fishes’ mission to rescue surplus food and redistribute it free of charge to our partner agencies to reduce food insecurity in Greenville County. During 2024, we rescued 2.5 million pounds of food and delivered it to over 100 partner agencies, including food pantries, shelters, afterschool programs, low-income housing and more. We work daily to alleviate food insecurity in our community by ensuring no good food goes to waste.
Ensuring no good food goes to waste means over $9 million in surplus food is redirected to those in need and kept out of our landfills. As long as over 60,000 people in our community struggle to put food on the table, we will be on the road rescuing food. Food is the largest category of landfill waste, contributing to 14.1% of U.S. emissions. By preventing 2.5 million pounds of food from ending up in our landfills, we reduced greenhouse gases by 9.5 million pounds and delivered enough food for 2.1 million meals.
