The Ujamaa Empowerment Network is a registered non-governmental organization in Uganda (File No. MIA/NB/2024/09/6369) focused on building relationships with people and communities to promote food security and increase household income among small holder farmers using organic farming practices which are cost and environment friendly. To ensure a healthy and productive population, the organization also prioritizes access to good health, emphasizing proper nutrition, addressing maternal health needs for women and girls and tackling the devastating challenges related to access to clean water and sanitation facilities in vulnerable communities.
Ujamaa is a Kiswahili word that means brotherhood or an extended family. It literally refers to a group of people working together for a common cause. Our vision resonates with the Ujamaa philosophy of H.E Dr. Julius Nyerere in Tanzania during post-colonial times, who believed in people working together to build self-sustaining economies.
Ujamaa's programs mainly focus on women and youth because they are the primary producers of food in many local communities. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), women and youth in sub-Saharan Africa make up approximately 50% to 60% of the agricultural labor force; therefore, empowering women with farming skills is important, as they are responsible for providing food to their families. Given the challenges that affect their productivity, we believe it's also crucial to address their health needs to ensure continuous production. Many challenges, such as limited food access, malnutrition, and menstrual health issues, affect women, youth, and children. This is why we believe that by equipping youth and women, these challenges can be more easily overcome.
