Our Mission

Phoenix Family helps people exit poverty by delivering support and opportunity right where they live. We work with children, families, and older adults through on-site programs and one-on-one help to build stability, strengthen skills, and create lasting change.

Our Vision

A world where everyone—regardless of age, income, or zip code—has the support they need to reach stability, self-sufficiency, and a better future.

Phoenix Family works alongside families, children, and older adults who live in affordable housing communities across the Kansas City area. For many of the people we serve, housing is only part of the picture. With an average household income just over $11,000 a year, one unexpected expense or crisis can put stability at risk. What makes the difference is having support that’s close by, practical, and built around real life.

Our programs are based where people live. That means tutoring and mentoring for kids, coaching and support for families working toward financial stability, and opportunities for older adults to stay connected, supported, and engaged as they age in place. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, we focus on listening, building relationships, and offering support that residents choose and find useful.

Volunteers are essential to making that work possible. Each year, hundreds of people give their time to Phoenix Family, helping with reading support, food access, seasonal programs, special events, and more. Even with that support, there is always more need than we can meet on our own. Whether you’re looking for a one-time opportunity, a recurring role, or a way to volunteer as a group, there’s a place for you here.
