POD the People

The purpose of POD the People, an Oregon non-profit corporation, is to empower the poor by making mobile micro-housing available to all. We will achieve this purpose by building and distributing a new type of mobile home—the Portable Opportunity Dwelling.

A Portable Opportunity Dwelling (POD) is a mobile home, vehicle, craft, or vessel, or a combination of mobile homes, vehicles, crafts, or vessels that is: (a) equipped with safe sleeping and sanitary facilities, (b) transportable without a driver’s license or insurance, and (c) small enough to fit in a standard vehicle parking, docking, or storage space.

In 2021, we released plans for a new type of POD based on a three-wheeled electric motorhome that will qualify under 15 U.S. Code § 2085 and ORS 801.258 as a “low-speed electric bicycle” which can be lawfully operated without a license or insurance in 29 states. 

With the accessibility provided by the Portable Opportunity Dwelling, POD the People will work to secure a comfortable standard of living for the many People who are without a home.
