Wikimedia Deutschland was founded in June 2004 in Berlin by active Wikipedia editors. Currently the non-profit organization has approx 5.000 members (January 2013). So called Wikimedia chapters have been established in almost 40 countries all over the world in order to support the work and goals of the Wikimedia Foundation. These chapters are independent organizations promoting the concept of free knowledge in their respective countries. Wikimedia Deutschland is the oldest and biggest chapter among them.
Wikimedia is an international non-profit organization supporting the free knowledge movement. The Wikimedia projects are hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation based in San Francisco, USA. Wikipedia is its largest and most well-known project.Wikimedia and its projects – like Wikipedia – are funded by donations.
