Planning Ahead empowers communities to build equitable and resilient futures through environmental education, workforce training, and civic engagement. By fostering partnerships, sharing power, and equipping people with the tools to thrive, we transform knowledge into action for lasting environmental and social impact.

Planning Ahead is a Durham-based nonprofit advancing environmental justice by placing community voices at the center of resilience planning. We believe that those most impacted by climate challenges are also best positioned to lead the solutions.

Grounded in our values of fairness, service, and shared power, we design programs that transform learning into action. From hands-on environmental education to green workforce training and civic leadership development, we create opportunities for people to shape the future of their neighborhoods.

We serve historically underserved communities in Central East Durham and Raleigh, North Carolina, where families face disproportionate risks from flooding, extreme heat, and economic inequities. Through initiatives like our Elevating from the Backyard to the Community (EBC) program and Extreme Heat & Flood Preparedness workshops, we provide residents with the tools to protect their health, strengthen economic stability, and advocate for community-wide resilience.

Since our founding, Planning Ahead has reached over 500 residents through programs that connect environmental literacy with real-world impact. At Planning Ahead, success means more than awareness; it means empowered residents, thriving neighborhoods, and communities leading the way toward equity and sustainability.
