Colorado Grizzly Coalition

The "last" Colorado grizzly was killed in 1979, but unconfirmed sightings have persisted yearly since then. If grizzlies still exist in Colorado they would probably be the last vestige of a grizzly subspecies and the last grizzly this far south on the entire continent. If the continued persistence of the grizzly in Colorado can be confirmed the Colorado Division of Wildlife and the Federal Govt. would be obligated to protect the bear (setting up additional wilderness areas, management plans for the sub-species and possibly breeding programs or reintroductions). Colorado Grizzly Coalition (CGC) is a grassroots group of naturalists, biologists, forest service personnel and concerned citizens that would like to give the Colorado Grizzly the protection it needs. To do this we need clear photographic proof that the bear currently lives in the state. Volunteers will set up camera trapping stations throughout Colorado and periodically check these backcountry stations for pictorial evidence of the bear. CGC will purchase camera traps, lead expeditions, train volunteers in grizzly bear biology and tracking and educate the public for the protection of this rare animal.
