Canon Hospice/The Akula Foundation

Hospice is a centrally administered program of palliative, not curative, care with supportive services which provide physical, psychological, social and spiritual care for dying persons and their families.

Canon Hospice has locations in Elmwood, on the Northshore, in Baton Rouge, and in Gulfport (Mississippi).

We have different types of volunteering work, but most broadly they can be divided into two main sections - direct patient care and indirect patient care. Direct patient care might include directly sitting with, praying with, talking to or reading to patients, or their families. Any time a volunteer provides any kind of support for a patient or their family directly. Indirect patient care might include clerical work like mailouts, or data entry. Any time a volunteer provides any kind of support for a patient indirectly.

The Akula Foundation is a non-profit offshoot of Canon Hospice that is inspired by hospice care. The Akula Foundation looks to help people in our community recover from grief and loss through innovative programs. We sponsor reminiscence therapy groups, grief support groups, continuing education of the broader hospice community (including a once a week radio hour), camps for children who are bereaved, and (when we can) help indigent families with the cost of hospice care. Depending on their skill set, volunteers aid us with each of these programs, and also with the larger project of fundraising for all of these programs.
