The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana is a USDA approved, primary distributor of food to local pantries, shelters, day care centers and soup kitchens. Founded in 1982, the Food
Bank has grown into a facility that acquires, stores and distributes 4.9 million pounds of food throughout Lake and Porter Counties. The Food Bank is an affiliate of Feeding
America™, the nation's largest domestic hunger relief organizations. For almost three decades, the Food Bank has served as a link for food relief to families, children, the elderly
and other individuals in need.
Our Programs
The BackPack program provides low-income children with a free food-filled box packed with six easily prepared meals for weekends when school cafeterias are closed. Currently, the BackPack Program feeds over 200 children and fills 3,600 backpacks with food.
Pantry on the Go - Mobile Pantry - The Food Bank often identifies extremely distressed communities that do not have access to a traditional food pantry. In these situation, the Food Bank serves as a mobile pantry unit, and will arrive at a location such as a community center to provide free grocery items to the community. To date, the Food Bank has distributed more than 180,000 pounds of food to more than1,000 families and seniors. The Pantry on the Go is sponsored by Northwest Indiana McDonalds Operators.
