Sierra Club, San Diego Chapter

Sobre Nós

Who We Are

Founded in 1948, the San Diego Chapter of the Sierra Club (“Chapter”) fosters within San Diego and Imperial Counties the purposes of the Sierra Club. We are part of the oldest and largest environmental organization in the country. That association provides us with instant name recognition, as well as credibility with the public, elected officials, and the rest of the environmental community. We get the benefit of the long history of the Sierra Club in responsible environmental activism. The San Diego Chapter’s members are more than 14,000 strong in San Diego and Imperial Counties. We have the advantage of residing in a geographic location that offers a diversity of natural environments and recreational opportunities. Our local surroundings include deserts, mountains, forests, beaches, and wetlands. We are one of the most biologically diverse areas in the country. The San Diego Chapter is one of relatively few Chapters that operate a lodge located in the Cleveland National Forest. More information on the San Diego Chapter can be found at www.sandiego.sierraclub.org The Sierra Club, founded in 1892, has more than 1.3 million members and supporters. The Club is America's oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization.

What We Do

The San Diego Chapter Sierra Club is a 501c3 and 501c4 non-profit organization. The Sierra Club is one of a few environmental organizations that take an active role in the political process. We take positions on issues and candidates, and make formal endorsements. We are able to do this because of our status as a 501.c4 organization. Inspired by nature, we work together to protect our communities and the planet. Thanks to the work of many Sierrans past and present, we have a long local history, a good reputation, and considerable influence. Our local staff supports the work of our volunteer member committees and activities. We take a leadership role in some conservation activities, and cooperate with other local environmental organizations in others. We have a vision of a San Diego and Imperial County region where people and organizations are empowered to preserve, protect, and enjoy our beaches, estuaries, urban canyons, watersheds, mountains, and deserts; promote safe and healthy communities; and encourage solutions to environmental problems in and beyond our counties.
