International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM)

Founded in 2012 by The Boston Consulting Group, Professor Michael Porter of Harvard Business School, and Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet, the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement, Inc., is dedicated to unleashing the power of value-based health care.

ICHOM’s aim is to transform health care by making transparent the results that really matter to patients (outcomes). Measuring – and comparing – outcomes will

• Improve physician practices by enabling the sharing of best practices and encouraging efficient treatment approaches – leading to better outcomes;
• Improve patients' lives by allowing them to choose providers based on outcomes; and,
• Improve systems by focusing reimbursement – and investments – on successful providers and techniques.

The heart of ICHOM’s work is the development of ICHOM Standard Sets, which are the universal sets of outcomes and associated risk factors that we recommend all providers track for their patients for specific medical conditions. We develop the Standard Sets collaboratively, bringing together leading physicians, registries and patient representatives from all over the globe. In 2014, ICHOM will focus its efforts on the adoption of these Standard Sets by providing tools to facilitate the implementation.
