Grandmas Gifts

Grandma’s Gifts is an organization that works to goods and services to children, families, schools, businesses, and organizations in Appalachia. We also work to educate people on the importantance of community service!

This organization was founded in 1993 by Emily Douglas, at the age of eleven, of Powell, Ohio. Emily founded this organization in memory of her grandma Norma Ackison of Ironton, Ohio, who passed away in 1991 of breast cancer. Since 2002, Grandma’s Gifts has operated as a donor advise fund through the Columbus Foundation, making cash donations tax deductible.

The cool part about this organization is that it is run totally by youth and young adults who volunteer their time!

To date, over $2,500,000 in goods and services has been provided. Additionally, over 650,000 books (estimated value $9.5 M) have been placed into the hands of needy children, daycare’s, hospitals, and libraries and over 10,000lbs of food (estimated ealue $12,500) collected and redistributed for the holidays. We estimate that the organization has donated in excess of $12.2M in goods and services. One-hundred percent of funds raised go to pay for goods, services, or books.

Additionally, Grandma’s Gifts work includes working to create awareness of women in science, recognize and appreciate veterans, speak out to local, state, and government officials about leadership, literacy and education, and support breast cancer awareness/research. Millions have heard Emily speak on Tv and radio or have read articles on the internet, in newspapers, and in magazines! Lastly, Grandma's Gifts and it's volunteer staff work to encourage and assist youth in getting invovled and making a difference!
