Mar Vista Family Center was founded in 1977 as a preschool for low-income families that aimed to engage parents as partners in the education of their children.
It is located in a low-income, densely, populated area of Los Angeles, adjacent to the only federal housing project in West Los Angeles.
The local residents are affected by violence, poverty and lack of education. Each year nearly 1,000 children, teens and adults of predominantly Hispanic origin take advantage of MVFC's programs.
Mar Vista Family Center currently operates various projects within three main program areas: Early Childhood Education, Youth, and Community.
By Youth For Youth is a program for youth that provides positive role models and important leadership development for 75 underprivileged youths ranging in age from 13 and up.
