THE VOLUNTEERS OF NIGERIA

THE VOLUNTEERS OF NIGERIA (VON)is a not for profit organization that offers volunteer opportunity in community projects throught Nigeria. We currently provide volunteer programs to our members and volunteers who want to volunteer their time, money, skills, knowledge and other services that make real differences in peoples' lives. OUR VISION Our vision is to support the work of local communities in Nigeria through the placing of both national and international volunteers.We believe that the local communities are in the best position to determine their needs, and we provide volunters to help them achieve their goals. Therefore, we engage and mobilize volunteers who are helping to solve serious social problems in a thousand of communities. OUR GOALS ARE 1.To promote and encourage volunteering. 2.To execute programs that serve individual and families in more than 500 communities across the country. 3.To cultivate in ourselves and others the sense of responsibility to, and compassion for, humanity and the world.

ACTIVITIES Through the efforts of its volunteers and staff, The VON (a) Helps responds to the pressing needs of information in communities around the country by helping to start a library. (b)Helps to create a community of volunteers whose overall motivation stem from a need to ignite sense of social responsility and activism,as well as from wanting to learn about a new culture and country. (c)Engages in services like delivering of meals to the elderly in their homes, reading mails to the un-educated, donating to motherless babies' homes etc. (d)Provides humanitarian and volunteering books, magazines and other publications to members and volunteers. (e)Hosts snd organizes conferences, seminers,workshops etc. featuring experts on humanitarian cause and the problem at stake.

THE VON LIBRARY PROJECT The aim of the VON library is to support and encourage reading among various community members. To help communities and members of VON learn new things, thereby giving them a key to a new world.

To achieve this,VON through its Library Commity solicits both print and non-print materials from individual donors, publishers,bookshops, organizations etc. from all over the world.

Materials thus collected are placed in THE VON INFORMATION AND RESOURCE CENTRE AT THE SECRETARIAT.

PRINT AND NON-PRINT MATERIALS COVERING TOPICS LIKE -- HUMANISM, POETRY, ENGLISH LANGUAGE, MATHEMATICS, EARTH SCIENCE, SCIENCES,PHILOSOPHY,ARTS and all types of children's books are requested.

Donors wishing to assist with this project are often advised to make sure materials are in good condition. Though fairly used materials are accepted.
