Native Tribal Scholars

The Native Tribal Scholars program (NTS) provides academic support and educational opportunities for Native American students in Massachusetts. Through an intensive summer residential experience and an academic-year component, NTS offers an array of culturally relevant academic, personal enrichment and college/career services to supplement public education and address individual academic needs. Our goal is to create a community of Native American scholars and to provide program participants with the skills and motivation necessary for access to and success in post-secondary education. We aim to increase the number of Native American students who enroll in and graduate from institutions of higher education.

NTS is modeled on UMass Boston’s highly successful Upward Bound Program and is sponsored through a partnership among the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, the North American Indian Center of Boston (NAICOB); and the University of Massachusetts Boston’s Institute for New England native American Studies and its Department of Pre-Collegiate and Educational Support Programs. Native Tribal Scholars is grant –funded through the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Indian Education.
