Southern Pines Animal Shelter

Sobre Nós

Mission Statement:

Provide humane shelter for homeless cats and dogs, provide affordable spay/neuter and healthy pet services and to encourage adoptions, while educating the community about responsible pet ownership.

What We Do: The Southern Pines Animal Shelter promotes animal welfare and responsible pet ownership in a variety of ways, including:

  • Finding homes for unwanted pets
  • Providing humane care for all animals in our custody
  • Educating the community about the problems of unwanted, neglected and abused animals
  • Operating a low-cost, high-quality Spay & Neuter Clinic for the general public (opened in July 2009)
  • Sheltering lost pets and reuniting them with their owner

The Southern Pines Animal Shelter is an "open admission" shelter, meaning that no animal is turned away regardless of health, age, or temperament. The Shelter works with the cities of Hattiesburg and Petal to house their stray animals, while also accepting unwanted and lost pets from an 12-county area. In 2010 there were 9,970 lost, stray, and unwanted animals (5,568 dogs, 4,379 cats, 23 others) brought to the Southern Pines Animal Shelter and 3,329 lives saved. Unfortunately many animals must be euthanized because of lack of space, resources, and adoptive homes.

In July 2008 the Shelter began feeding Hill's Science Diet exclusively and recommending it to all adopters. Thank you to the generous donors who made this possible! Feeding a consistent high quality food helps keep shelter pets healthier and stops the stomach upset and diarrhea caused from using a variety of donated foods.

Please adopt your next dog or cat from the Shelter. The Southern Pines Animal Shelter is a PetSmart adoption partner. Shelter cats are available at the Hattiesburg PetSmart store everyday during store hours, and dogs are available on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

How the Shelter is Funded:

The Shelter receives part of its funding from the cities of Hattiesburg and Petal, as well as from Forrest and Lamar counties. The Shelter Board of Directors and its Advisory Committee also write grants to seek additional funding that can be used for facility and program improvements. Tax-deductible private donations continue to be a major source of funding for the Shelter. Please consider joining the many in our community who have become "Friends of the Shelter" today!

The Southern Pines Animal Shelter is a 501(c)(3) non-profitorganization chartered in 1952.
