GODS GARDEN
Missão
Sobre Nós
We began a new garden in July of 2019. After clearing out shrubs + other items we planted one row (30" wide) with vegetables. In the past 5 ½ years we expanded the garden to 1.09 acres. We teach people the basics of gardening (planning, planting, maintaining + harvesting), what grows well in our area, what types of insects are beneficial + which ones are not, what to use for clay soil, what enhances the soil + thus its productivity, + water conservation methodologies. We supervised Cub scout troops in harvesting crops, taught people how to prepare compost piles, + given advice on how to prepare the vegetables. By teaching people how to grow + sustain their own vegetable gardens, they will get the freshest vegetables, save money + improve their health. Children learn how math is applied in everyday life through gardening. We are available to help those who need community service hours (e.g. school students). One other thing that distinguishes this garden from other gardens is that it is run like a farm. Our goal is to continue to increase the garden size so that we can reduce food insecurity in Fort Bend County. We do this by applying for grants for gypsum. Gypsum makes the soil friable, releases nutrients to plants more easily + allows the soil to drain better. After the gypsum is applied, we put one ft. of manure on top.
