New Canaan Mounted Troop

Celebrating its 79 th year, New Canaan Mounted Troop is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which provides the most

comprehensive educational Full Horsemanship and Equine Care Programs for youth in Fairfield County. In 2012, NCMT also launched the Super Troopers Therapeutic Programs to serve children and adults with special needs.

Located in New Canaan, CT, NCMT was founded in 1939 by celebrated horsewoman, children’s author, and community leader, Margaret Cabell Self.

To this day, NCMT honors the founding principles of its original mission statement:

To build leadership, responsibility and confidence in youth through sound horsemanship and to enrich the lives of individuals with special needs through equine assisted activities.

All students and volunteers walk through our barn doors with a love for horses and leave with so much more!

New Canaan Mounted Troop is looking for volunteers to support "Super Troopers" therapeutic riding and equine care programs for individuals with physical, cognitive, emotional, and developmental needs. Recognizing the powerful and positive impact that horses can make in a person's life, NCMT's programs are designed to promote physical and emotional wellness through equine therapy and horsemanship.

Experience with horses is not necessary. All volunteers are required to attend a volunteer orientation. New volunteers will be paired with a mentor volunteer. Programs are conducted on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Volunteer requirement is 1 hour per week minimum.
