About Green-Wood
Established in 1838, Green-Wood Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark, is internationally recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful cemeteries. At the same time, it is also an outdoor museum, an arboretum, and a repository of history. As the “permanent residence” of over 570,000 individuals, Green-Wood boasts magnificent grounds, grand architecture and world-class statuary that have made it a destination for national and international tourists, New Yorkers and local Brooklynites.
Further, Green-Wood is the repository of millions of archival records and a collection of photographs, artwork and documents that help tell the story of its “permanent residents”. Public tours, educational programs, after-dark performances, art installations, and more extend its mission to commemorate life within a singular natural setting. It’s a bold statement to say that Green-Wood is working to redefine what a cemetery is, but that is exactly what Green-Wood is doing here in Brooklyn. Its unique combination of features – art, history and nature – offer New Yorkers and visitors from around the world an experience unavailable anywhere else.
Green-Wood is now completing the restoration of the 1895 Weir Greenhouse, directly across from its main entrance on Fifth Avenue and 25th Street in Brooklyn. An Education & Welcome Center (new construction) and a new landscape plan for the front entryway are planned to complement the historic greenhouse. The Green-Wood Historic Fund, the cemetery’s 501c3 organization, raises funds for public programming, educational programs, and any activities outside the purview of regular cemetery operations.
