Washington Youth Garden, Friends of the National Arboretum

  • Sobre Nós

Using the garden cycle as a tool, the mission of the Washington Youth Garden at the U.S. National Arboretum is to inspire children and families to engage in self-discovery, explore relationships with food and the natural world and contribute to the health and well-being of their communities.

    WYG conducts the following programs:

Garden Science: an eight week indoor and three week outdoor enviromental and agricultural science program for 150 third and fourth grade students in the District of Columbia.

Growing Food...Growing Together: an intensive twenty week, organic gardening and cooking program for 20-25 families on Saturday mornings from May through October.

Seed to Supper: an eight week summer program that explores gardening, science, cooking, nutrition and taste, foodways and art. About 30 youth meet twice each week.

SPROUT (Science Program Reaching OUT): one-time agricultural outreach programs for local schools. Programs take place in both the school classrooms and the Garden.

Established in 1971, WYG is supported by the Friends of the U.S. National Arboretum and the National Capital Area Federation of Garden Clubs. Slow Food DC supports the garden through a variety of educational programs and benefits.
