During two weeks in the summer, each camper discovers that they aren’t the only one in the world who has to prick their fingers, test their blood sugar, and count their carbs. Camp Hendon is an all-volunteer camp for children with Type 1 diabetes in Kentucky and the surrounding region. We achieve our mission through two separate week-long residential camping sessions for approximately 200 children with diabetes between the ages of 8-17.
The focus is on fun, but the lessons learned are critical to long-term success. Camp is a child-friendly atmosphere where healthy habits are reflected by adult role models, most of whom are also living with diabetes. All of our camp staff are volunteers, and we rely on donations from companies for medical and treatment supplies.
