Founding of the Home

Hope for Orphans Rehabilitation Centre (HOREC) is a Home for HIV/AIDS Orphans and Vulnerable Children. It is situated at Mutalia Area, Kangundo Constituency. Hope for Orphans Rescue Centre is home to 33 children who are either living or orphaned with HIV/AIDS. The home was established by Christine Wambui in 2005 after volunteering in various slums looking after people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). In the process of administering ARVs and giving food aid to PLWHA, she experienced first-hand the neglect and abuse the children of the PLWHA underwent. She started taking the children whose parents had passed on or their guardians abused them into her own home.

Christine Wambui was able to raise limited resources from family, well wishers and in the process rented a single room that provided shelter to girls only due to their vulnerability. She was able to get services of a volunteer house mother who assisted with providing care and protection to the children.

Sponsorship

In 2007 a volunteer from America purchased land where the children presently reside. The home has undergone rapid metamorphosis from its humble beginning thanks to Barclays Bank (CSR) who put up a girl’s dormitory. Barclays Bank has been actively involved with HOREC since then. Every year Barclays Bank staff visit the children and bring with them foodstuff, plant trees and engage the children in games.

Other organizations that provide monthly financial support for HOREC include Global Hope and Bright Point For Children. Many individuals in the community identify themselves with HOREC and make regular visit to be with the children.

The First United Methodist Church (FUMC) has sunk a borehole in HOREC that will provide clean drinking water, not only to HOREC children but also the inhabitants of the community at a small fee. The water will be used for irrigation of food crops. FUMC has funded the construction of the library, office and boys dorm.

Safaricom Foundation was involved in financing the construction of a chicken coop that houses 550 broilers.

PG BISON Kenya limited constructed a state of the art kitchen as part of their CSR.

Currently, in total HOREC has 26 (twenty seven) girls and 9 boys aged between 1 1/2years – 18 years and they have all, since then, gone back to school.
