    A volunteer application must be completed before becoming a volunteer. Wear your volunteer badge and fill out a timesheet every time you volunteer.

    Descrição

    Are you good at math, social studies, science or language arts? Do you want to support adult learners in reaching their goals? Partner with adults studying for the GED tests during the tutoring sessions! During the weekly shift, volunteers will meet with learners individually or in small groups at Midland Library. Study materials will be provided.

    Location: Midland Library, 805 SE 122nd Ave, Portland, OR 97233

    Time Commitment: Tuesdays from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. A minimum of 2 shifts per month for a minimum of 6 months. Please note this is a drop-in tutoring program, so attendance may vary. Your flexibility is appreciated, as your presence is valuable to the students who attend.

    Tasks & Responsibilities

    • Offer individual or small-group tutoring in weekly sessions.
    • Assess students' needs, review their GED study materials (Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science), and offer exam preparation. Be prepared to review work that students have completed independently.
    • Use positive reinforcement, be prepared, and adapt activities to students' interests to build confidence and skills.
    • Promote a comprehensive and non-judgmental learning environment.

    Skills & Qualifications

    • Minimum 18 years of age.
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
    • Teaching or tutoring experience is preferred.
    • Empathy, patience, flexibility, creativity, and a strong commitment to the students’ educational goals.
    • Willingness to use diverse teaching methods and a deep respect for learning diversity are required.
    • Pass a criminal background check. We will evaluate each case individually. Having a conviction does not automatically disqualify you from volunteering.
