Childcare Assistant Volunteer

Schedule: Flexible (Minimum volunteer commitment required)
Reports To: Executive Director / Childcare Program Supervisor
Position Overview
The Childcare Assistant Volunteer at Sheltering Grace Ministry supports the daily operations of our faith-based childcare services. Volunteers assist in providing a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment for infants and young children while serving mothers and families in crisis.
This is a non-paid volunteer position for individuals who have a heart to serve, enjoy working with children, and desire to support families through compassionate, faith-centered care.
Lunch will be provided each day the volunteer is scheduled to serve.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist with supervision and care of infants and young children (ages 6 weeks to preschool)
- Support age-appropriate learning, play, and developmental activities
- Help maintain a safe, clean, and nurturing childcare environment
- Assist with feeding, diapering, and routine childcare needs as appropriate
- Support mothers participating in SGM programs during childcare hours
- Follow all SGM childcare policies, safety procedures, and confidentiality standards
- Assist with classroom organization, toy sanitization, and activity preparation
- Participate in daily devotionals and faith-based activities as scheduled
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
Volunteer Experience & Growth
Volunteers will gain experience in:
- Childcare and early childhood support
- Faith-based and trauma-informed care
- Serving families in crisis within a nonprofit ministry setting
- Team collaboration and compassionate service
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years or older
- Interest in childcare, family services, ministry, or community outreach
- Ability to work patiently and compassionately with infants and young children
- Willingness to complete a background screening and comply with child safety policies
- Commitment to SGM’s mission, values, and faith-based environment
- Reliable, respectful, and dependable
Volunteer Terms
- Volunteer / Non-Compensated Position
- Lunch provided on scheduled volunteer days
- Volunteer schedule and duration agreed upon in advance
- This role does not guarantee paid employment
Supervision & Support
Childcare Assistant Volunteers will receive:
- Orientation and on-site training
- Supervision from SGM leadership or childcare supervisor
- Ongoing guidance and support
- Volunteer service verification upon request
