    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a NYC-based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, creative expression, publishing, housing innovation, and community-based programs. Education is central to MAP’s mission—providing consistency, safety, and opportunity for young people navigating instability.

    About the PromiseLearning Division

The PromiseLearning Division leads MAP’s educational strategy and delivery across curriculum, education programs, academic support, literacy, social-emotional learning (SEL), and mentoring programs. The division designs and oversees trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and developmentally appropriate learning and mentoring experiences that support students from early childhood through adolescence.

PromiseLearning integrates curriculum design, instructional practice, mentor development, and program evaluation to ensure learning and mentoring environments are equitable, accessible, and effective.

    Role Overview

The Chief of Education is the senior leader responsible for setting and stewarding MAP’s education and mentoring vision and strategy across the PromiseLearning Division. This role oversees curriculum, education programs, mentoring programs, and instructional quality, ensuring all learning and mentoring experiences are aligned, trauma-informed, inclusive, and mission-driven.

The Chief of Education serves as a strategic partner to the CEO / Executive Director and collaborates closely with Programs, Operations, Development, Content & Storytelling, and Housing leadership to ensure education and mentoring efforts are integrated, ethical, and impactful.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Set and lead MAP’s organization-wide education and mentoring strategy through PromiseLearning
    • Oversee curriculum development, education programs, and mentoring programs across all age groups

    • Partner with Operations and Data teams to support evaluation, outcomes tracking, and continuous improvement
    • Collaborate with Content & Storytelling to ensure educational and mentoring materials are accurate, accessible, and ethical
    • Advise executive leadership on education and mentoring priorities, risks, and long-term planning
    • Represent MAP in education- and mentoring-related partnerships and strategy discussions as needed

    • Senior experience in education leadership, curriculum development, or program oversight
    • Strong understanding of trauma-informed, equity-centered education and mentoring practices
    • Experience working with children and youth across multiple age groups
    • Ability to align education and mentoring strategy with mission and real-world constraints
    • Strong leadership, communication, and systems-thinking skills
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    • Familiarity with literacy development, SEL, and mentoring program models
    • Experience leading cross-functional education and program teams
    • Background in curriculum design, educator or mentor development, or educational research
    • Experience supporting students experiencing housing instability

    Commitment

    • Volunteer executive leadership role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration
