Autumn Hospice is seeking compassionate and dependable individuals to serve as Companionship Volunteers in Sterling, MA. In this role, you will provide emotional support and meaningful presence to patients and their families during end‑of‑life care. Your time and attention help ease loneliness, promote dignity, and offer caregivers a much‑needed break. No medical care is required—just a kind heart, a listening ear, and a willingness to be present.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one‑on‑one companionship through conversation, reading aloud, games, or quiet presence
- Offer respite for caregivers by staying with patients while they rest or attend to personal needs
- Participate in light activities such as listening to music, simple crafts, or short walks (when appropriate)
- Document each visit and communicate with the Volunteer Coordinator
Qualifications
- Must live in Massachusetts and be able to travel to visit with hospice patients in Sterling, MA (i.e., private homes, assisted living, or skilled nursing facilities)
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Reliable transportation and current auto insurance
- Ability to work in environments that may include illness, odors, or emotionally challenging situations
- Comfortable providing support in sensitive or end‑of‑life settings
- Successful completion of a criminal background check
Preferred (Not Required)
- Previous volunteer experience
- Hospice or healthcare experience
