Virtual Nonprofit Advocacy Volunteer / Student Intern

Rhode Island Atheists, a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization operating in RI, is looking for a motivated volunteer to join our team!

Are you a college student or young person interested in social justice, activism, advocacy, politics, public policy, community organizing, or nonprofit work?

Do you enjoy social media, researching interesting topics, following current events, and helping turn ideas into action?

Rhode Island Atheists is seeking a Virtual Advocacy & Communications Volunteer to work directly with our organization's leadership. This is an unpaid position open to people anywhere in the United States.

This is a flexible opportunity that is similar to a nonprofit assistant or internship. You don't need to be a professional or have years of experience. We're primarily looking for someone who is curious, dependable, willing to learn, and comfortable communicating regularly.

What You'll Do

Depending on your interests and abilities, you may help with:

• 📱 Researching and developing social media content
• 🔎 Researching current events, legislation, organizations, public policy, and social issues
• ✍️ Helping develop posts, campaigns, educational materials, and advocacy messaging
• 📣 Monitoring social media and identifying opportunities for outreach and engagement
• 📰 Researching news, trends, and issues relevant to our mission
• 🧠 Brainstorming ideas for campaigns, events, and community outreach
• 🤝 Learning about nonprofit advocacy and community organizing
• 📊 Helping organize information and research
• 💬 Communicating regularly with the Director and other members of the organization
• 🌎 Helping promote religious freedom, separation of church and state, LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive freedom, social justice, and acceptance of nonbelievers

You will not be expected to know everything when you start. We want someone who is willing to learn and grow.

What We're Looking For

You may be a great fit if you:

• Are a college student, recent graduate, or young person interested in nonprofit work
• Have an interest in advocacy, activism, social justice, politics, public policy, or community organizing
• Are comfortable using social media
• Enjoy researching and learning about new topics
• Can communicate clearly and reliably
• Are organized and able to work independently
• Are willing to communicate with the Director on a regular basis
• Are curious, creative, and willing to take initiative

Professional social media experience is NOT required. If you're already active on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X, Threads, Bluesky, or Reddit and understand how people communicate online, that's valuable experience.

Compensation

This is an unpaid volunteer position.

However, some financial opportunities may be available for eligible students, depending on circumstances and available programs or organizational opportunities. These possibilities can be discussed during the application/interview process.

Location & Schedule

100% Virtual — United States

You can participate from anywhere in the country.

The schedule is flexible, but reliable communication is important. This position will work closely with the Director, so we are looking for someone who can check in regularly, respond to messages in a reasonable timeframe, and communicate when they are unavailable.
