Summer Camp Support

Help support Monterey State Historic Park's annual Los Exploradores Summer Camp! This camp takes place June and July in two, two week sessions and is for students entering grades 3-5.

This unique summer program will have day campers exploring the rich cultural and natural history throughout Monterey State Historic park and beyond. Campers will experience our historical buildings and colorful gardens through hands-on activities such as period games, crafts, food, songs, dances, nature observation, and interactive guided tours.

Your role as a Summer Camp Support Volunteer would be to assist camp counselors through a variety of identified activities. The opportunities for Summer Camp Support are:

Camp Excursion Volunteer: Camp Excursion Volunteers help to guide campers about .5 miles across downtown Monterey to visit historical sites for their daily field trips. These sites include the Cooper-Molera Adobe, Colton Hall, Larkin House, Stevenson House, Casa Gutierrez, and more! Your role would be to assist staff in ensuring camper safety while walking downtown as well as assisting with any activities taking place at each location. Time commitment for this volunteer opportunity would be around 2 hours per shift.

Storytime Volunteer: Campers have daily "story time" breaks after lunch to help recenter their focus towards learning and we want your help to lead this activity! During story time, campers will gather in a quiet, comfortable space to read an age appropriate and theme related short story or poem. A short discussion will take place after the story to guide relevance to our camp curriculum. Time commitment for this activity is about 15-30 minutes per shift.

Theater Rehearsal Assistant: The final day of the Los Exploradores Summer Camp ends with a performance for the friends and family of campers. A part of this performance involves a play put on by campers about themes and topics discussed at camp. We want your help and input into guiding campers through performance practices throughout the week. This includes helping assign roles, giving performance tips, and lead dress rehearsals. Materials will be provided to help prepare volunteers in the theater rehearsal role to ensure readiness for the program. Expect a time commitment of 1 hour per shift for this opportunity.
