What if you could help a student discover their career path and change the course of their life? As a volunteer Career Mentor, that’s exactly what you’ll do!
Career Mentors are from the Metro Detroit business community. They attend one-hour sessions with high school students, helping them explore careers, build confidence, and learn essential life and job-readiness skills.
Sessions are held at a participating high school. They begin with a staff member who leads a short lesson, then Career Mentors and students work together on a fun, structured activity that brings the topic to life.
Yes, you might find yourself working with students to build a tower out of spaghetti noodles and marshmallows, but you’ll also be helping students build communication and teamwork skills they’ll use for the rest of their lives.
Being a Career Mentor isn’t difficult. You just need to care, be willing to listen, and show up. Our staff will train and support you every step of the way.
Since 1994, we’ve served more than 50,000 students and awarded $2.2 million in scholarships for college and trade school.
90 percent of our students are people of color. All attend a high school in Detroit, Harper Woods, Hazel Park, Sterling Heights, or Warren. Some are the first in their families to pursue college or trade school. All are eager to learn from Career Mentors who believe in them.
Career Mentors are placed at a specific high school based on the Mentor's preference and the program's need. See website for more information.
