About Health Justice Initiative
Health Justice Initiative (HJI) is a community-driven nonprofit organization that promotes justice and equity by leveraging the law at the individual, community, and systemic levels. We provide litigation and mediation services at no or low cost for individuals and families experiencing poverty or low income. We empower communities by raising awareness about rights, legal procedures, and government policy, and we advocate for fair and just policies at institutional and government levels.
Position Overview
The Paralegal will work closely with clients, staff attorneys, and the program manager to support HJI’s direct legal services and overall casework. This role offers meaningful, hands-on experience in legal advocacy at a new and growing nonprofit organization. This position will pay $25/hour.
Key Responsibilities
- Take on legal research projects.
- Conduct intake calls with prospective clients and record case information.
- Assist with case management, including maintaining organized case files and tracking deadlines.
- Draft legal forms, letters, and other documents under supervision.
- Conduct legal research and summarize findings for staff review.
- Support ongoing legal cases by gathering relevant information and preparing case summaries.
- Summarize transcripts, case records, and other supporting documents.
- Communicate with clients regarding case updates and requests for additional information.
- Assist with outreach and education efforts related to legal rights and procedures.
- Provide general administrative support to staff, including scheduling, correspondence, and data entry.
Qualifications
- Located in NYC.
- At least 2 years of paralegal experience.
- Currently a licensed attorney/paralegal seeking nonprofit legal experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple tasks.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Must be strong in legal research.
- Outstanding communication skills.
- Interest in legal services, access to justice, or nonprofit advocacy.
- Fluency in additional languages is an asset.
- Prior experience in legal research, litigation, or client-facing roles preferred.
