    Become a Docent at the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum

    Fall in love with the roots of California history and embark on journeys through the past each and every day with visitors of all ages.

    Join our docent team and become storytellers on the history of the Dominguez family, Homestead adobe, and the Rancho San Pedro.

    The story tellers of history are the foundations of the future...

    Through our two-step program, we can give you all the necessary tools for success in becoming a docent that will guide public, private, and school tours through our historic adobe site. You will receive benefits like invitations to docent outings, volunteer luncheons, discounts, and more. With a small commitment you can make a huge impact.

    Tour Leadership

    Responsibilities:

    • Lead guided tours for school groups, families, and the general public.
    • Present accurate and engaging information about the history of the Dominguez family, Rancho San Pedro, and early California.
    • Adapt tours to meet the interests and age levels of different audiences.
    • Encourage questions and foster interactive discussions.
    • Maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment for all visitors.

    Historical Knowledge

    Responsibilities:

    • Learn the history of the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum, its collections, and historic grounds.
    • Become familiar with key historical events, artifacts, and exhibition topics.
    • Participate in docent training sessions and continuing education opportunities.
    • Stay informed about new exhibits, research, and museum programming.
    • Represent historical information accurately and professionally.

    Visitor Engagement

    Responsibilities:

    • Greet visitors and provide a positive first impression of the museum.
    • Assist guests with directions and general museum information.
    • Promote museum programs, events, and membership opportunities when appropriate.
    • Answer visitor questions or refer them to museum staff if needed.
    • Help ensure guests have a meaningful and enjoyable museum experience.

    General Expectations

    All docents are expected to:

    • Successfully complete the museum's docent training program.
    • Commit to a regular volunteer schedule as agreed upon with museum staff.
    • Wear appropriate attire or a museum-provided name badge while on duty.
    • Follow all museum policies and safety procedures.
    • Represent the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum with integrity, professionalism, and respect.
    • Maintain confidentiality regarding museum operations when appropriate.
    • Notify museum staff in advance if unable to fulfill a scheduled shift.

    From the 405 Freeway

    • Take the Alameda Street exit.
    • Head north on Alameda Street.
    • Continue approximately 1 mile.
    • The museum entrance will be on the right.

    From the 710 Freeway

    • Exit at Del Amo Boulevard.
    • Head west on Del Amo Boulevard.
    • Turn right (north) onto Alameda Street.
    • Continue approximately ½ mile.
    • The museum entrance will be on the right.

    From the 110 Freeway

    • Take the Del Amo Boulevard exit.
    • Head east on Del Amo Boulevard.
    • Turn left (north) onto Alameda Street.
    • Continue approximately ½ mile.
    • The museum entrance will be on the right.

    Parking

    Free parking is available around the museum's historic rose garden. Please park head-first in the marked spaces. During special events, additional parking may be available on the lower grounds, while upper parking is typically reserved for accessible parking.
