Volunteer Web Designer — Domestic Militarization Watch

The Domestic Militarization Watch is a new initiative that tracks and exposes the expansion of military tactics, equipment, and federal force deployment in U.S. communities. The project will feature a public-facing tracker, reports, and educational materials that highlight how militarization undermines human rights and civil liberties.

The Volunteer Web Designer will help design and maintain the online hub for this initiative, ensuring that the data, visuals, and stories gathered by PEP are accessible, informative, and visually compelling to the public.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and maintain a web-based tracker to visualize data on domestic militarization incidents across U.S. cities.
• Collaborate with research and graphic design volunteers to integrate infographics, maps, and testimonies into the site.
• Ensure the site is visually aligned with PEP’s existing branding and easy to navigate.
• Optimize pages for readability, accessibility, and performance (mobile and desktop).
• Assist in embedding reports, press releases, and calls to action within the site.
• Coordinate with PEP’s Executive Director and staff to update and publish new content as data is collected.

Qualifications

• Experience with WordPress, Squarespace, or similar CMS platforms.
• Knowledge of HTML/CSS, JavaScript, or data visualization tools (Airtable, Flourish, Tableau Public) a plus.
• Strong design sense and attention to accessibility and user experience.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a small advocacy team.
• Interest in peace, social justice, or human rights causes.
• Familiarity with digital security or data privacy for advocacy work (preferred but not required).
