ABOUT UPSTAGE LUNG CANCER

Upstage Lung Cancer is a volunteer-run nonprofit founded in 2008. Our vision is to advocate for early detection in lung cancer and help increase detection and diagnosis rates by 50%. As the first cancer charity to exclusively use music and the performing arts to accomplish our mission, Upstage Lung Cancer strives to promote awareness, advance understanding, and remove the social stigma of lung cancer and to raise funds for research and innovation in early detection and diagnosis of lung cancer.

Some of us are lung cancer survivors, some are the friends and the family of the many whose lives have been affected by lung cancer, some are dedicated healthcare professionals who care for our patients diagnosed with lung cancer, and some are members of the arts community who are committed to fighting lung cancer. Our aim is to use musical and theatrical entertainment to raise funds to accomplish our mission. Read our founder’s story here.

OPPORTUNITIES TO VOLUNTEER

Upstage Lung Cancer welcomes volunteers who want to make a meaningful difference in lung cancer awareness and support our mission through their time, talents, expertise, and ideas. Whether you are interested in events, fundraising, marketing, social media, research, community outreach, administration, or another area, there are opportunities to contribute in ways that match your skills and interests.

Volunteer opportunities are flexible and can range from short-term projects and event support to ongoing leadership roles. Opportunities can be in-person or remote. Experience is welcome but not required; enthusiasm, reliability, creativity, and a willingness to help are equally valuable. We are also interested in connecting with students, professionals, retirees, and community members who want to share their expertise or develop new skills while supporting Upstage Lung Cancer.

1) EVENTS MANAGER

Description

Upstage Lung Cancer is seeking a motivated volunteer to serve as an Events Manager and help plan, coordinate, and execute events that raise awareness of lung cancer and support the organization's mission. Upcoming events can be found here.

Responsibilities may include:

• Help plan and coordinate fundraising, awareness, educational, and community events.
• Develop event timelines, task lists, and logistics.
• Coordinate with volunteers, vendors, speakers, sponsors, and community partners.
• Assist with event promotion and registration.
• Help coordinate event-day volunteers and activities.
• Track attendance, expenses, donations, and other event information.
• Identify opportunities to improve future events.
• Assist with post-event follow-up and evaluation.

2) MARKETING DIRECTOR - ADVERTISING & PUBLIC RELATIONS

Description

Upstage Lung Cancer is seeking a volunteer with an interest or experience in marketing, advertising, public relations, communications, or nonprofit outreach. This volunteer will help increase awareness of the organization's mission, programs, events, and impact.

Responsibilities may include:

• Develop and implement marketing and communications strategies.
• Help create promotional materials for programs and events.
• Identify opportunities for media coverage and community exposure.
• Draft press releases, announcements, newsletters, and other communications.
• Develop relationships with local media, community organizations, businesses, and other partners.
• Assist with advertising campaigns and promotional outreach.
• Help maintain consistent organizational branding and messaging.
• Track engagement and evaluate the effectiveness of marketing efforts.

3) SOCIAL MEDIA & VIDEO CONTENT CREATOR

Description

Upstage Lung Cancer is seeking a creative volunteer to help tell our story through social media, photography, video, and digital content.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in social media marketing, communications, graphic design, photography, videography, or digital storytelling.

Responsibilities may include:

• Create short-form video content for Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms.
• Photograph and/or record events and organizational activities.
• Develop social media posts, graphics, reels, and other digital content.
• Help develop a social media content calendar.
• Repurpose existing content for different platforms.
• Highlight volunteers, donors, events, programs, and organizational accomplishments.
• Monitor engagement and identify opportunities to improve social media reach.
• Help maintain consistent visual identity and messaging.

4) DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT - FUNDRAISING & COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

Description

Upstage Lung Cancer is seeking a volunteer with an interest or experience in fundraising, donor relations, nonprofit development, corporate partnerships, or community engagement. The Director of Development will help identify and develop opportunities to expand organizational support and build long-term relationships with donors, businesses, foundations, and community partners.

Responsibilities may include:

• Identify potential individual, corporate, and foundation donors.
• Research sponsorship and fundraising opportunities.
• Help develop sponsorship packages and donor communications.
• Assist with fundraising campaigns and special events.
• Develop relationships with businesses and community organizations.
• Assist with donor recognition and stewardship.
• Research grant opportunities and assist with grant-related activities.
• Help maintain donor and prospect information.
• Develop strategies for increasing recurring and major donations.
• Work with organizational leadership to establish fundraising priorities.

5) STUDENT INTERN - LUNG CANCER AWARENESS & NONPROFIT DEVELOPMENT

Description

Upstage Lung Cancer is seeking student interns who want to gain hands-on experience while contributing to the fight against lung cancer.

Interns may work on projects involving nonprofit management, public health, marketing, social media, fundraising, event planning, communications, research, data analysis, or community outreach.

Potential projects may include:

• Social media and digital marketing
• Event planning and execution
• Fundraising and donor research
• Grant and sponsorship research
• Community outreach
• Public relations and communications
• Data entry and analysis
• Donor database management
• Research related to lung cancer awareness
• Development of educational materials
• Photography, videography, and graphic design
• Other projects based on the student's interests and organizational needs

Students and recent graduates, especially those in the Boston area, are encouraged to apply.

6) VOLUNTEER - SHARE YOUR SKILLS!

Description

Do you have a particular skill, background, or area of expertise that you would like to use to support the fight against lung cancer?

Upstage Lung Cancer welcomes volunteers who want to contribute their time, talents, expertise, or ideas. You don't need to fit into a specific position to make a difference.

We are especially interested in volunteers with experience or expertise in areas such as:

• Finance & Administration: e.g., accounting, finance, data analysis, human resources, administrative support, and legal/compliance
• Fundraising & Development: e.g., fundraising, grant writing, donor relations, board development, corporate partnerships, and community outreach
• Marketing & Communications: e.g., marketing, public relations, social media, graphic design, photography, videography, and website development
• Programming: e.g., event planning, blog writing, podcast producing, and reviewing grant proposals submitted to Upstage Lung Cancer

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will depend on your skills, interests, and the organization's current needs. You may work on a specific project, provide ongoing assistance, or help with a one-time initiative. We are interested in learning what YOU can bring to the organization. Experience is welcome, but enthusiasm, reliability, and a willingness to contribute are equally valuable.
