The AHope Day Center will be participating in the Asheville/Buncombe Code Purple shelter system. From November 1st to April 30th - Code Purple will be called on nights that have below freezing temperatures or are otherwise severe. Code Purple is called 48 hours ahead of time. When called, AHope will have 20 beds for couples and humans with pets - which can not be accommodated at other shelters.
We are looking for volunteers to help shelter staff from 5pm to 9pm on nights that Code Purple is called. We would be able to notify volunteers of need 48 hours in advance.
Duties:
- Help set up cots, blankets, and any pet accommodations like kennels as needed
- Help shelter staff with intake
- Provide food to clients - either self serve or pre packaged - there is no cooking involved
- Hand out things like toiletries and towels for clients taking showers
- Help staff to monitor clients and pets for safety during open hours
- Assist shelter staff with any other duties that may come up throughout the evening
