Must be available to attend and lead sessions twice a month during the school year. Additional hours may be required for prep, communication, and training.

Position Overview: The Media Relations Coordinator/Intern will support She Became’s Communications team by expanding our visibility across traditional press, digital outlets, and influencer networks. This role is designed to help elevate She Became’s mission, support year-round programming, and drive awareness and attendance for our annual May gala. The position will focus on building and maintaining media and influencer relationships, crafting outreach materials, and supporting campaign execution. This role could start as project-based that could grow into ongoing involvement with the organization, including potential board participation, if desired.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research and build a comprehensive media contact list across Chicago/Illinois and Kentucky, including journalists, editors, community outlets, newsletters, influencers, and digital platforms.
- Identify and vet relevant influencers and creators in Chicago for potential partnerships to amplify gala promotions and fundraising campaigns.
- Draft press releases, pitch emails, media advisories, and influencer outreach messages.
- Support promotion of She Became’s annual gala by coordinating media outreach, pitching story angles, and assisting with speaker announcements and ticket marketing.
- Collaborate with the Communications and Marketing teams to execute content and visibility campaigns leading up to the gala and other fundraising events.
- Track outreach, monitor responses, and maintain an organized system for media and influencer engagement.
- Assist with event-day communications support as needed.
Qualifications:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling story pitches.
- Basic understanding of media relations, public relations strategy, or influencer marketing.
- Ability to research and build organized lists of contacts and outreach targets.
- Comfort working independently with guidance in a mission-driven environment.
- Genuine interest in nonprofit work, youth empowerment, education, or community-based initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience pitching media, coordinating outreach, or working in a PR/communications role. (or current relevant coursework)
- Familiarity with the Chicago media landscape or local influencer communities.
- Experience with social media strategy or digital marketing campaigns.
- Event communications experience — particularly around fundraising or nonprofit galas.
- Spanish language fluency is a plus (given bilingual program partners).
