Why Intern with SMWEF in Ghana?

    • Gain practical, real-world experience: SMWEF Ghana offers internships across areas such as healthcare, social work, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry and many more. This allows you connect what you learn academically with real community work.
    • Make a meaningful contribution: Many SMWEF Ghana placements are in rural and semi-rural communities where resources and services are limited. Your internship can therefore combine professional development with community impact.
    • Experience Ghanaian culture and communities: Interning in Ghana gives you the opportunity to work directly with local communities and gain a deeper understanding of Ghanaian culture, social issues, and development challenges rather than simply visiting as a tourist.
    • Build cross-cultural and interpersonal skills: Working alongside local staff, qualified professionals, and community members can strengthen your ability to communicate and collaborate across different backgrounds.
    • Support your academic or career portfolio: Interning with SMWEF Ghana can be used as part of college or university placement and its programs provides certificates of participation and reference letters upon request.
    • Develop professional skills: Depending on your placement, you can develop skills in communication, teamwork, healthcare delivery, or advocacy.

On weekdays, you will be taken to the hospital at 8am and brought back to your accommodation at 1-2pm for lunch. Afternoon provides opportunity for exploring the local community, enjoying the beach, hanging out with likeminded volunteers and interns in your accommodation, attending global health seminars, relaxing while reading your book, or shopping in the supermarkets in the community with your host family/coordinator.

    • You will also have the option to extend your clinical hours by returning to the hospital for an afternoon, evening or night shift allowing for a more comprehensive experience.
    • Weekends are free to explore whether participating in community health outreach programs or engaging in preventive health education while immersing yourself in local communities and their culture.
